Semi Final Thing

So the following images are what I call my best work of the year:





This picture was for the complementary color assignment, where I went out into my yard and just started shooting. Most of my images really stunk but this photo I think excelled. I had to bring up the color just a little because it turned out looking really gray instead of blue, but... it turned out really nice, I believe.



This image was for the numbers assignment. I reallllly like it but I must confess I did not come up with the idea. My friend, Laura, ( the girl), was running around and asked if she should lay down next to the tramp and make a ten. But I took the picture! :) I love the concept of the photo, it is really outside of the box, which I think is really what I needed.



I call this Olivia's Ghost. I think all pictures should have a double meaning,make it more than just a picture. I think this acomplishes that. To me this is not a portrait but a story about a girl who is trying to be be in two places at once, like most teenagers. I like the deep black and the white because they are "undefined" kinda unknown... or maybe thats just me.



So I am walking back from a nursury after shooting the 50 free shoot and I see this perfect shadow and i am in love. Because I am who I am, I wanted to be in the picture to so I entered the scene too. The Image turned our very nice I believe because it show a story. Maybe all you can see is a blurry shadow, but I see me reaching out to the world and trying to move the tree.I may not be able to " move the tree" I might even come close but at least I am trying.



Laura can be discribe as many things- beautful, talented, crazy. However I think this photo tell you more about who she really is. ( can you tell she loves trees?)The reason I think this image is successful is because it tell everything you coule ever what to know about her, just in one picture.

Assignment 4- Free shoooot

I feel like this assignment was by far my best assignment. After hearing everyone talking about how this assignment "sucked", I wondered why I liked it so much. Some photographers like boundries for they give them something to work with like the clay to a sculpture, while others would rather go searching not for any photo in perticular, but just the right image. I am the latter. I think i don't see the assignment, I see pictures. When I am given boundries sometimes they are really click with me but at other times they fence in my imagination ( I should probably learn how to fix this.)
Like Slade told me earlier, I had good light and a good location. I think thats what I really learned to wait for the perfect light and finding the location was pure luck. So I offically like free shoot, however I am sooooooo ( with about a million o's) excited for portraits. That is one of the few assignments that i connect with.... Just thinking about it I probably should blog about that after I have shot.

Irving Penn

Irving Penn was a wonderful photographer know for his portraiture and fashion photography. He was born in 1917 and just recenlty died at the age of 92. He attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art. He worked for Vogue magazine for many years before starting his own studio. At this studio he started making new techniques that many photographers after him followed. One of these techniques was posing his subjects in a closed, small space.

If you are going to take a picture of a product, you can just take a picture of it, just the prduct. and it may sell. But take a look at these :

I don't wear makeup, however I would buy that mascara.

This is making me rethink lipstick.... Look at the texture...

The two above pictures I am in love with...

There is a lot of emotion and symbolism in light. If you have half of a face hidden it could mean you are torn between dark and light. A single spotlight can tell the story of fame, all light can show perfection,grey can be the unknown. Irving Penn understood this, and used it. This image is grey to me. It tells me- I'm not getting up just yet, and whn I do, I don't know whats going to happen quite yet, but do I really need to?
This image says one word, to me : Fame. This womans confidence is raditating off of her whole body. Sure, alot of photographers could do this and it would be a good photo... but they can't tell this story, this well.
A child doesn't know evil from pure, wrong from right. The uncertianty on this little girls face tells us this. it shows us this. This is my favorite of Irving Penn's black and white.

So the light in the original was really yellow and.. well sucked. So i fixed that up a bit and Voila! Oh, the first image is my before ...
