Willy Ronis

I chose my photographer because of his name, at first. I mean- how can you not love the name Willy Ronis? But when I started looking at his work, I fell in love.
Willy Ronis was born in Paris-1910. Both of his parents were refugees, one a jew the other from Lithuania. His father opened a photography studio in Montmartre. His early interest were music and he hoped to become a composer. Returning from compulsory military service in 1932, his violin studies were put on hold because his father's cancer required Ronis to take over the family portrait business; Ronis' passion for music has been observed in his photographs.[1] His father died in 1936, whereupon the business collapsed and Ronis went freelance, his first photographs being published in Regards.
That is the start of Willy. From there he went on to be the first french photographer to shoot for Life magazine. He is also well known for his nude pictures, as a sign of natural beauty. ( I agree.)

I like this image because it is the classic old picture. It has good light, and is a good image. I like the mean old lady coming out of the café. :)



This has to be one of my favorite images. It looks like one of those eye trickster puzzle thing that makes you think- how does that work. I also am wondering what those boys are looking at- a cat that they threw in... a naked woman... I don't know, but that really makes this photo.




"Paris is the key to her heart..." Anastasia had it right. I love this image, :). I especially love the light around the lovers heads.. and how you can kinda see the Eiffel Tower in the top right hand corner.


I LOVE THIS IMAGE. The lady looks like a ghost first of all. And the reflection of the tower is... priceless. To me this image is saying that we are just people, who are 'blurry' and not always there, but the land, it is. Yep, i read to much into stuff. Maybe thats why the call me crazy...



I really like this photo. Look at the little boy's face and how happy he is. He reminds me of Aladin after he has stolen some bread, but a french version. His background is really nice- it compliments the boy's 'brightness'. Now look at the tiny shadow. It reminds me that we always have someone with us... ourselves; even through the hard times.


So I hope that you look up Willy Ronis.( His nude pictures are actually really good. Although I couldn't publish any, give them a try.)

For my phtotgrapher report I chose an artist who you may not have heard of. Marc Yankus. Marc Yankus shoots very interesting photographs and tend to shoot somewhat towards the macabre. His work has been included in exhibitions at The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, New York; Exit Art, New York City; The Library of Congress, Washington, DC; and recently at ClampArt, New York City. He has shot many covers for books and His images have also been used for theatrical posters for such acclaimed Broadway shows as Jane Eyre; August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom; and John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer Prize winning play, Doubt.
A ot of his phtots tend to be blurry, which leaves you as the viewer with only a little amount of information about the image. But that is one of the coolest things about Marc- he lets you decided the rest. Marc has a silly obbesion with clouds.He has many pictures such as Cloud Ball and Cloud No. 10. Another one of Marcs favorite thing to shoot is the city lights, and builings. Most of these pictures are blurry such as

Biography time:
Marc Yankus was born in Hempstead on Long Island in New York and grew up in a section of it called Hewlitt Harbor. Eleven years later they moved to moved to Manhattan’s Upper East Side. In an Interview he says this about his past and his interest in art : " My mother was very interested in fine art and often took me to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was actually close to where we lived. Since the Met is located in Central Park, I loved the combination of art and nature, and I remember constantly delving into this during a schoolteachers’ strike, which lasted two whole weeks. In the Early American Wing at the Met I often escaped into the 1700’s. During such time travels I took sketchbooks and drew. I also liked to draw on the subway and around New York. Later I attended the high school of Art and Design on Second Avenue and 52nd Street where I had to submit a portfolio of my artwork and take a test to get accepted. Even with my love of drawing, it was at this high school that I became interested in photography. I remember being mesmerized while watching an image appear in the developer. Besides darkroom processes, I also learned about 35mm and 4” x 5” format cameras. I was particularly interested in surrealism and the manipulation of scale and remember going up on a roof of a building to distort the scale of some of the images I was shooting."

I feel really connected to MArc for I too started with art. I loved drawing and then when I saw the wonderes of photo, it won me over.

Anyway continuing- He attended the School of Visual Art in Manhattan and majored in fine art meaning painting and drawing.During this time he started making collages which were influenced by those of Joseph Cornell. He states, "In looking at the large body of photographs I had taken to make my collages over a period of time, I realized that I had become a photographer. " He also states that he was very influenced by the German photographers Bernd and Hilla Becher as well as drawings of industrial scenes.
Marc photographs a lot of children such as James :


I find that his work is not nessacraly meant to find realstic people or views but to see plain and simple aboject and people in a different light, no pun intended.

William Christenberry

For starters, this guy rocks! William Christenberry uses plain and simple backgrounds, time, and amazing light, to portray America as the strange little place it is.If I had to discribe William's style in one word it would be : Documentary. He does a lot of time lapse projects- houses, churches, or other buildings. He likes trees and truck and uses the motto- " Simple is better."
Although he had a lot of success as a photographer, he didn't really want to be one when he first stared using the camera in the 1950's.
So let's look at some pictures :



This is my favorite picture of his. It is perfect. I am wondering if the door just has red paper on it or if it really is bricks. Hmmmm....




Ahhh... this is a creepy picture. It is a KKK man. Yep... Doesn't the light make him look even more creepy...

Final Portfoilio~

For my final portfolio I would like to do a project on body parts, mostly hands and eyes, maybe feet, I am thinkning. For at least one, I want you to be able to put the pieces together and see the person. Thats one idea. Another idea is to take a picture of someone's eye then another person's eye and hair , then another persons hand and feet, ext. So sort of making a collage of people. I really want to portray the human, or the human race. If I can portray how really we are all very similiar I will be really happy : That is what I origanally wanted to do. I basically did this, except for my prints, they are all combined to make one big face of my mom. I took a bunch of other pictures of people and I had fun, but in the end I think these work best. I had A lot of fun, however it was very hard for me to do the assignment because i was dependent on my subjects. I Hope you like these. :)

Assignment 5

This is before shot, my orginal crappy picture. I really thought it was going to work out, but I guess thats just the way it works. These are jewerly boxes,they were all black and for low key.

I made this a high Key picture instead of low key. This is one of the boxes, and though it has a dramatic change in the "picture" i feel it was nessecary to make it the best " photo" it can be. :) Thanks

Beautiful Nepali Girl

I love this picture!! Look at the girls eyes, the are telling you something. Harry took this picture and let you decided what that something is. I really love the way the light and the people reflect in her eyes. In this picture I think the color helps it, but is not needed to tell the story. This picture is by Harry Kikstra, Harry, I have never heard of you but this is great.

Now here is the same image black and white. This is still nice, but I like the color better. :)
